“These four women were part of one of the most amazing teams of arts activists in the 20th century. They did not wait for anyone to ask them to contribute to culture or to get involved with the most important artistic movements of their time. They stepped forward and they made it on their own terms.” -Keri Walsh, Editor, "The Letters of Sylvia Beach"
A plaque honoring Paris bookseller Adrienne Monnier was unveiled Sept. 10, 2021 at the location of La Maison des Amis des Livres at 7 Rue de l'Odeon, Paris. Opened by Monnier in 1915 and financed with 1,000 francs given to her by her father, La Maison des Amis des Livres specialized in art and contemporary French writing and became a legendary literary salon. Monnier encouraged Sylvia Beach to open Shakespeare and Company and to publish Ulysses.
